MANDALAY RESIDENCE

Mandalay Residence consists of the expansion and complete renovation of a single-family home situated on a large tree-filled lot in suburban Ottawa. The client’s need for additional space due to a growing family, was the catalyst of the project. The decision was made early on in the process to preserve the existing home rather than to demolish it. The addition is intentionally expressed as a separate form with its own design language in contrast to the existing home, however they remain in harmony with one another.

The existing home and the addition are separated by a glazed ‘link’ where the vertical circulation of the home is located. The layout of the existing home was entirely re-organized to better suit the needs of the inhabitants. The main entry, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen are situated in the existing home whereas the living and dining spaces are located in the addition. The south-facing addition consists of a simple timber-clad gable form with 10’ high ceilings and expansive glazing. Emphasis was placed on maximizing the amount of natural light to enter the home and obtaining views to the surrounding trees on the site.
